"Following 2017’s sold out R.A.P Party, Africa Writes returns with the official festival party hosted by Octavia Poetry Collective. Join us for a Wakanda-themed evening of poetry, music and dancing into the night /future where we’ll showcase and celebrate the words, the art, the song of womxn from Africa and the diaspora. Featuring Theresa Lola, Momtaza Mehri, Sarah Lasoye, Victoria Adukwei Bulley, Hibaq Osman, Rachel Long, Belinda Zhawi, and Amina Jama, and a speech on ‘Warrior Womxn Writers’ by special guest Bernardine Evaristo.
This year the party takes place at Rich Mix – a vibrant venue in East London that brings together artists and people of diverse backgrounds through art and culture.
Octavia is a poetry collective for womxn of colour founded in response to the lack of representation and inclusivity in literature and academia. Since 2015, Octavia have come together to read beyond the canon and write themselves. They meet monthly at Southbank Centre, London, and regard it as their poetic home. Octavia have featured on BBC World Service, in The Guardian, ASOS, Hotdog Magazine, and have run poetry and creative-educational workshops for University of Oxford and the Serpentine Galleries.
