TBBNQ Book Meet!
October 8th: The Secret Lives Of Baba Segi's Wives
fter a year of hosting a virtual book club, we finally went physical and had our first book meet! Our pick for discussion was the hilarious yet tragic story of Lola Shoneyin's The Secret Lives Of Baba Segi's Wives - one of our September reads. We were privileged to have the author, Lola, join us and share about the inspiration for the novel and its characters; unravelling and analysing the juicy secret of each wife, together, as well as her use of language to develop fuller and real characters.
We had honest, open and fun conversations about sexual abuse, mental health, sex, adoption, friendship, motherhood, race, familial conflict and the games of marriage in a Nigerian home. We were hosted by our friends at Quintessence - one of the best outlets for African art, souvenirs and literature in Lagos - and joined by two representatives of Stand To End Rape Initiative (S.T.E.R) who helped nuance conversations on sexual violence. We had such a great time, and are already counting down to the next meet!
